Mike Malak - Head Coach, Head Men's Coach
Mike is a Level 3 U.S. Rowing certified coach and has coached high
schools in Virginia since 2001. Mike rowed, sculled and coached for
over 15 years at the Milwaukee Rowing Club in his home state of
Wisconsin. He was a member of the 1970-74 University of Wisconsin Crew
that won 3 Ten Eyck IRA Championship trophies, and coxed boats to one
silver and two gold medals at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association
national championships. Mike competed in the Henley Regatta in England
in 1973 and coxed his boat to a record time in their event.
John Meehan - Head Women's Coach
John coaches
the Women's Varsity and Lightweight Eight. He started rowing at George Washington High School
in Alexandria. John has been active in sculling with OBC (Occoquan Boat Club)
since 1983. He coached at Potomac High School in 1985, Woodson High School in
1989-1994, and luckily came to us at Woodbridge Crew beginning in 1994. He is an
enthusiastic and talented rower and teaches single sculling to both adults
and students in summers. John works for the
Prince William Health District and is an avid turkey hunter. Coach Meehan's great
talents were appropriately recognized in 2000 when he was voted the "Women's High
School Rowing Coach of the Year" by the sports writers of the Potomac News. This was repeated for the 2001 season as well. Coach Meehan participated in last summer's US Rowing Master's Nationals
Regatta in three events.
Stephanie Ferguson - Assistant Men's Coach
Stephanie has been rowing for almost ten years with Prince William Rowing Club and the Occoquan Boat Club. She has rowed at the Masters Nationals, the 12-mile Wye Island Regatta three times, and rowed for Olympic coach Holly Metcalf at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. Stephanie is a former crew mom, a third-year high school coach, U.S. Rowing Level II certified, and a registered nurse with several years of emergency room experience.
Kelly Bryan - Assistant Women's Coach
Kelly is one of our homegrown coaches. She rowed at Woodbridge throughout her high school career before graduating in 2002. She was captain her senior year, as well as named to the All-Met and All Area teams in 2001, and honorable mention for both in 2002. She led the Varsity Quad to two silver medals at States and the National Capital Area Sculling Championships on the Occoquan. She went on to row at George Mason for four years before graduating in 2006 with a B.S. in Exercise Science. She was captain at GMU in the 2005-2006 season. Additionally, she is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and a personal trainer at Gold's Gym. She also holds a certification as an indoor rowing instructor and she teaches rowing classes at Gold's. She started coaching for Woodbridge in the winter of 2005 going on to coach the Novice girls in the spring of 2006.
